If you’re visiting Hannibal and have some time to really explore, you’ll find some things about Hannibal that most people don’t know unless they’ve lived here for decades. There are a myriad of trails through Riverview Park that most people are not even aware of. Look for the white circles to guide you through some beautiful forest and a challenging hike on the bluffs that overlook the Mississippi River. During the day look for the colony of black squirrels that live in the park. Be patient, these little squirrels are more wary than their large red cousins. If you’re there in the evening you can watch hundreds of massive vultures find their nightly resting place in the trees along the river.

While you’re exploring Riverview Park, take one of the trails down to the river and take a look at the wonderful tunnel we have that is still in use by the railway. Just watch for trains as you’re exploring!

Another trail that isn’t well known or well traveled is the Bear Creek Trail. It is great for bikes, walking or taking the dog out for a stroll. Located on the South side of historic downtown, it runs right a long Bear Creek and is a beautiful walk.

Hannibal is on one of the biggest bird navigation routes in the United States. See white snow geese and pelicans fly over in flocks that number in the thousands. If you watch carefully, you’ll see rare and unusual birds that are not normally in this region. In the winter, visit one of the locks and dams and watch the bald eagles fish for food. It is always interesting and dramatic.

HIDDEN RETREATS
For a few cool hidden places to stay you might consider the Stone School Inn,
it is a converted school and is in a picturesque, rural, hidden location north of town. Richard and Di Ann Hammon will make you feel right at home. A secluded space right in the middle of town is the Luxury Loft Apartments on the corner of Bird and Third Street. Flint Hill Garden Cottage is just 9 miles South of Hannibal in New London. This small B&B has a full kitchen and a large hot tub. Finally our favorite hidden jewel is the Garth Mansion south of town on New London Road. This beautiful Italianate home has a Victorian décor. For something a little more contemporary take a look at the cottages behind the home. You will be amazed at the amenities offered.

HIDDEN SHOPPING
If you didn’t know about it, you just might miss the Hannibal Farmer’s Market. In the late spring through early fall, you’ll find some of the freshest produce in town at Central Park on Saturday mornings and Tuesday afternoons. You can also find craftspeople selling their wares, as well as baked goods and many other goodies.

Another hidden shop that you might not have thought of visiting, is Rags to Riches Pawn Shop. You can find some of the very best deals in town on merchandise that changes frequently – everything from pearls to camcorders.

MUCH MORE...
The Molly Brown Home is small and tucked away on Denkler’s Alley just off Mark Twain Avenue. It’s hard to believe a woman that bold and powerful came from such humble beginnings.

LOCAL ARTISTS
You may not have heard, but the Mark Twain Museum on Main Street has an extensive collection of original Norman Rockwell paintings. There are even sketches and preliminary paintings that show the progression of his work. For more artwork, visit the Hannibal Arts Council. This wonderful little gallery space houses some very interesting exhibits that travel through our area or are put on by local artists.

Feel like making a little art of your own? Visit the Rooster’s Crow Art Center for all the supplies you need to get started creating.

CEMETERIES
For history buffs, you may want to visit some of the beautiful cemeteries in Hannibal and find the resting place of many famous and infamous Hannibal residents. A great place to start is the cemetery just south of Lovers Leap on Highway 79. Area residents have been working hard to maintain the Old Baptist Cemetery on the west end of Summer Street. As Frank Salter, our favorite historian and chemist, explains, “Baptist bury people when they are old, hence the name.”

HOMETOWN HANNIBAL
Watch for Tom and Becky in downtown Hannibal. They make regular appearances and have a wealth of information about Hannibal and the writings of Mark Twain. If you’re lucky you may even see Mark Twain himself! Richard Gary does a wonderful performance of Mark Twain and is often seen around town talking with visitors.

Just for fun, locate the Col. Potter house on Fifth Street. I’m sure you remember Col Potter from M.A.S.H. – he claimed he was born and raised in Hannibal. A couple in town (with tongue in cheek) named their home “The Col. Potter” home.
